… And the Rest! — Nominations for PGA, DGA, and BAFTA Awards!
Okay folks, this is it. The undercard has been officially filled out. Over the last 24 hours we’ve gotten the final film nominations for the Producers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America, and the British Academy! These three ceremonies, which will take place over the next month, represent the last batch of major nominations ahead of Monday’s release for the Academy Awards. There’s a lot to go over, so let’s get to it!
The nominees for the 73rd Directors Guild of America Awards are:

So what can we glean from this list? Basically, the five nominees for Best Director will almost certainly come from these groups, primarily the main Theatrical Film category. I’d imagine that four of the five nominees at least will come from there, with one of the First-Time nominees possibly sneaking in as well. Either way, with this group of filmmakers, if we still end up with five men nominated next week, it will be a legitimate scandal, as there’s a ton of crossover between the Directors Guild and the Directing Branch of the Academy. As for the documentaries, it’s a bit harder to say. All five nominees are on the Academy’s shortlist, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all that much. Only two of the past five winners even got nominated for the Oscar ( O.J.: Made in America and American Factory), though notably, both ended up winning the grand prize. I’d imagine at least a couple of these will make the Academy’s final cut, though, as there hasn’t been a case in the last 10 years where the final Documentary Feature category hasn’t featured a single DGA nominee. Moving on!

Spoiler alert, folks, your Best Picture field has just been revealed. The Academy is moving to a firm list of 10 Best Picture nominees going forward, rather than the 6–10 they’ve done since 2009. And while the award goes to the Producers of the film, and there’s not a direct correlation between the PGA and the Academy (the entire body gets to nominated Best Picture and International Feature regardless of Branch), more often than not the PGA nominees are a mirror of the final category, with one or two exceptions. I’ll allow for the smallest of outside chances that Soul or The Father sneaks in instead of Borat, as the Academy has been mostly hostile to comedies for the last half century, but apart from that, these are your nominees.
As for the other two categories, the inclusion of Over the Moon here might override its omission from the top prizes at the Annie Awards, as there are a good number of producers in the Animation and Short Film Branch. Hey, whatever knocks Trolls out of the running is fine by me. As for the Documentaries, we have four nominees here on the Academy’s shortlist, and the second endorsement for The Truffle Hunters. That bodes well for Dweck and Kershaw.

Okay, we’ve got some stuff to parse through here. First off, don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of half of these movies before. They’re films of British or other foreign origin and simply haven’t gotten an official stateside release yet. Some may be vying for awards next year. You also get a couple of cases of movies that competed here in 2020 that are just now getting their due across the pond. Nothing to worry about on that front.
I think the most surprising thing here is just how much BAFTA loves News of the World. It might be up for a technical or two over here, but otherwise the only major nomination it looks to secure is Supporting Actress for young Helena Zengel, and curiously, she’s not nominated here. There’s also a lot of love for Promising Young Woman, Minari, and Nomadland.
I also found it odd and refreshing how many nominations Another Round got. I’m not against Mads Mikkelsen getting a Best Actor nod for the Oscars as well. He gave a tremendous performance. I don’t see it happening, but it’d be a nice surprise. I raise a similar eyebrow for Quo Vadis, Aida?. Perhaps these nominations will bolster their respective chances at an International Feature nomination.
I do feel a little bit of vindication in some of the technical areas. For example, Rebecca getting nominated for Production Design. In that otherwise awful film, I did note that the design elements were pretty great. It was the one redeeming quality the movie had. The same goes for Hillbilly Elegy getting a nod for the Makeup. With luck, that’ll be the only aspect that gets recognized by the Academy on Monday as well.
